In-store merchandise sales rebound significantly » strategy

Fashion, furniture and accessories are booming, according to the latest analysis from Retail trade data from Statistics Canada by Ed Strapagiel.

Supported by very robust apparel sales, the in-store merchandise sector grew 12.7% year-over-year for the three months ending February 2022. According to Strapagiel, apparel and accessories “are the retail best-seller”, with sales up 39.8%. % year-over-year growth for the quarter.

Jewelry, luggage and leather goods, as well as footwear, also grew strongly. General merchandise, furniture and home furnishings stores also posted double-digit gains for the period.

The automotive sector continued to post strong gains, with a 16.4% year-over-year increase for the three months ending February 2022. The underlying 12-month trend also improved to achieve a gain of 23.8%.

Sales at auto dealers rose 11.1% during the period, although this was partly due to a favorable comparison with the sluggishness of the previous year. The sector’s main driver is service station sales, which have risen 30.5% year-on-year in the past three months as prices rise and workers return to settlements more conventional in the office.

RRetail sales in the food and drug sector fell 1.3% year-on-year, which Strapagiel says shows sales may be coming back to earth after the big numbers of 2021.

Supermarkets and other grocery stores account for about a little more than half of retail sales in this sector, but their sales have fallen 3.1% over the past three months. Convenience stores lagged, with sales down 6.2% over the reporting period.

According to the figures, a correction is happening in the ecomm, with sales down 16.3% year-on-year. According to Strapagiel, it looks like shoppers are returning to physical stores, but cautions that it’s hard to determine what will happen next.

Regionally, sales in the Greater Toronto Area and the Montreal area are leading the charge, while British Columbia saw minimal growth.
